Weather

We spend one week focusing on Weather.  Below are some of the activities that we do during this unit.

I usually begin by reading the book "What Makes the Weather" on the first day.  We then brainstorm different types of weather and discuss our favorite kind of weather.

After reading the book "Wind" by Susan Canizares, we dicuss how wind is moving air.  We then  do a Huff and Puff experiment in order to find out how many puffs of our wind it will take to move certain objects past a line.  First, we predict how many puffs we believe it will take to move the object.  Then we blow to find out the exact number of puffs needed.  As we do this, we graph the number of times for each object.  We then look at the graph to see which one took the most puffs and which object took the fewest puffs to move.  We compare to see if any of the objects required the same amount of puffing.  We then discuss why we think certain objects take more puffs than other objects.  We do this experiment whole group and then it is placed out at a center for the students to use independantly during Center activities.

We discuss the effects of wind as well as good and bad wind.  We make "kites" and have tons of fun flying them in the wind!

Another experiment that we do during our study of weather is an experiment to show that air is stronger than water.  We perform this experiment by placing a cup with a paper towel in the bottom of the cup straight down into a bowl of water.  Air gets trapped in the cup and does not allow any water to get in so the paper towel remains dry.  The students also enjoy seeing air released from the cup by tipping it over just enough to let some of the air escape creating an air bubble in the water.

The towel is placed in the cup.   The cup is placed in the bowel of water.

If the cup is pulled straight up and out of the water, the air keeps the towel dry!!!!!!!!!

We read the book "Down Comes the Rain."  It helps teach us about the water cycle.  We learn that when it rains and a puddle is formed, the water will evaporate back into the air.

This picture shows where water was placed into a cup and marked.  The cup was marked again after four days to show how much water had evaporated from the cup.

After reading "It Looked Like Spilt Milk,"  we go outside to use our imagination by looking up at the clouds to see what they look like to us.  The students draw the outline of a picture and write a sentence explaining.  The picture is then cut out and the words are cut apart and glued on a blue piece of construction paper.

After reading the book "Bear Shadow," We go outside to find our shadows and to see which side of our bodies the sun has to be on to produce a shadow.  These students pictured below were very creative with their shadows!!!!!!!

An alligator!  A bird!  A butterfly!  A girl!

Can you guess what this is?     Yes, it's a duck!      An elephant!

A monster!               A spider!                  The Statue of Liberty!

A zombie!                A giraffe!                    A soaring bird

Some other activities we do throughout the week are:

  A weather graph.

 A weather word puzzle.

Center Time Fun!

Phonics

Use a cotton ball (cloud) to paint sight words!

Theme

Make a kite picture!

Writing

Write about the different types of weather.

Math

The pictures above show kite addition.  Students roll the dice to get a number.  They put the same amount of orange kites on their paper as the dots shown on the dice.  They then write the correct number in the first cloud.  They roll the dice again and place that many green kites on the paper.  They write the correct number in the second cloud.  Then they count the total amount of kites and write in the answer on the last cloud.

Students pick a temperture card color in the correct temperture on thermometer.

Art

Students make a torn paper rainbow at the art center.

Science / Social Studies

Students create a kite picture at this center.
