Transportation

We spend one week focusing on Transportation.

I start the Transportation week off by reading a Big Book Magazine.  This book has many forms of Transportation in it.  We also discuss if the forms of Transportation are land, water, or air.

We sort the different pictures by land, water, and air.

After dicussing types of Transportation that move on wheels, we make a paper plate into a wheel and write about one form of Transportation with wheels.  These can be all placed together to form a class book.

After reading "Get Off Our Train," we make a train.

We graph the form of Transportation we use to get to school.

We make our own travel invention out of shapes.

Centers

Math

Vehicle Addition / Subtraction

The students use the colored cars to figure out the answers to addition and subtraction problems.

Number, number word, and dot matching game.

The student places the car with the number on it that matches the amount of dots in the parking space.  There are also parking spaces with number words and addtion problems.

The students look at the addition problems on the people to figure out which train car to place them in.  The answer is written on the back of each person for self-checking.

Art : Make a Hot Air Balloon out of shapes

Book Center

The students are able to choose many different Transportation books.

Bricka Block Inventions

The students make travel inventions out of Bricka Blocks.  They test their inventions against a match box car on a ramp to see which one will roll the fastest.

File Folder Sorting

Students sort out water and air transportation from land transportation.

Phonics - Spelling

This center has bags with different types of Transportation on each bag.  Inside the bag are letter tiles.  The student must put the letter tiles in the correct order to spell the Transportation word.

Transportation Sentences

Students use stencils to create pictures of different types of Transportation.  Then they write sentences about each one.

Geo-Safari Phonics Lab

When students come here, they work with letters, sounds, and blending sounds together to create words.

Transportation Rolling Predictions

The students have a list of objects to predict if they will roll or not.  After predicting the students test the object and place a check on the prediction sheet form.

Sight Words

Students practice reading sight words to each other on cars.

The students enjoy drawing Transportation pictures on the wipe off board.

Transportation Word Find

At this center, the students look for the transportation words and cirlcle them with a wipe off marker.

Writing Center

At the writing center, the students use foam transportation pieces to create a picture and write sentences to explain the picture.

Other Cute Ideas

Make the travel invention using colored construction paper instead of coloring.

Create a pattern with tires (cereal) and air bags (marshmellows)!
